GNYHA collaborated with the American College of Physicians, New York Interest Group (ACP-NY) and four Brooklyn internal medicine residency programs (Interfaith Medical Center, Maimonides Medical Center, New York Methodist Hospital, and Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center), to develop a special one-day Medical Acculturation Program for International Medical Graduates that was held on Tuesday, June 13, 2006 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Grand Prospect Hall in Brooklyn. This was the first year a program of this kind was available to new residents. The program was administered by the GNYHA Foundation.
The purpose of this one-day training program was to assist new physician residents in making the best adjustments to the cultural environment of U.S. residency training programs and hospitals. The program addressed some of the knowledge, skills, and terminology that can contribute to a more rapid cultural adjustment into the U.S. health care system. In addition, this program provided an opportunity for the international physician residents to network with fellow physicians from residency programs throughout Brooklyn.
