GNYHA Foundation: 2013 Twenty-Fourth Annual Symposium on Health Care Services in New York: Research and Practice

2013 Twenty-Fourth Annual Symposium on Health Care Services in New York: Research and Practice

On November 6, 2013, GNYHA and the United Hospital Fund (UHF) hosted the Twenty-Fourth Annual Symposium on Health Care Services in New York: Research and Practice. This year’s symposium focused on patient activation and engagement with a keynote presentation by Judith Hibbard, DrPH, Senior Researcher and Professor Emeritus at the University of Oregon.

In her presentation, Dr. Hibbard discussed her research and development of the Patient Activation Measurement (PAM) tool, which measures patients’ readiness, skills, and confidence to modify behaviors to better manage their health. The measure system and tool developed by Dr. Hibbard and her colleagues categorized patients into one of four levels of patient activation and this structure can guide health care providers in ensuring that information and goal-setting is targeted appropriately to particular patients. Dr. Hibbard also noted in her presentation that research has shown that patient demographics such as socioeconomic conditions account for only a small portion of PAM score variation.

The Symposium also featured a panel discussion on strategies to increase patient engagement and activation and a poster session showcasing innovative programs covering a variety of topics, including health information technology, health literacy, chronic disease management, and quality and patient safety.
